Italy’s government is a republic which means the country's supreme power is held by the people and the elected representatives. Italy was granted independence on March 17,1861. Italy also has a civil law system. Italy’s current president is Giorgio Napolitano and their current Prime Minister is Matteo Renzi. The prime minister is more referred to as the President of the Councils of Minister. Each president is elected by and electoral college, which consists of both houses of parliament and 58 regional representatives. Each presidential term is 7 years long, but there are no term limits.
